Top 10 Best Ceiling Speakers in 2017 – Complete Guide

Best Ceiling Speakers

One type of audio equipment that, understandably, not too many people are entirely familiar with the best ceiling speakers. Unless you’re designing the public address system for a new building, or trying to create a unique and elaborate sound setup in your house, then you probably won’t bother reading up on these hidden gems. In recent years, however, ceiling speakers have slowly become a viable option for people who are looking to get great indoor audio without having to disrupt the visual flow of their home’s interior design scheme.

While there may never be a definitive answer to whether ceiling speakers are better than their freestanding counterparts, the many advances in audio electronics technology have made the former appealing even to the average consumer. Contrary to what others might say, there are actually quite a number of benefits to swapping out your conventional speakers for a set of ceiling speakers, and below are just a few of them.

Key advantages of In-Ceiling Speakers

  1. Get More Floor Space – This is especially true if you intend to set up your speaker system inside a small house or a room with limited floor area. By having your speakers integrated into the ceiling, instead of taking up precious floor space, you get to have more room for you to move around or to bust out your dance moves whenever the occasion calls for it.
  1. Built-In Acoustics – Aside from not having to deal with those bulky speaker cabinets that you keep banging your shins on, ceiling speakers let you take advantage of your room’s natural acoustics. By having the hardware built flush into the ceiling, the space right above it conveniently becomes a sort of built-in acoustic cabinet that, if done properly, provide better bass and treble response all around.
  1. Better Wiring Management – If you don’t completely trust wireless Bluetooth speaker systems, but you don’t want to fumble around loose audio cords on the floor either, then your best option might be to get a good set of ceiling speakers. With all of the electronic circuitry hidden inside the ceiling cavity, there would be less clutter on your floor to navigate through, and fewer accident risks.
  1. Less Acoustic Interference – With freestanding or wall-mounted speakers, sound usually has to go through or around objects like furniture, house plants, or even framed paintings or photographs hanging on the wall. On the other hand, the sound coming from the best ceiling speakers don’t have to deal with as much interference, thus providing you with an unhindered listening experience.
  1. Maintain Room Aesthetics – You love the how your room looks, so why should your speakers ruin it for you? Or why should you have to make compromises between having great sound and keeping the aesthetics of your room intact? Because ceiling speakers take up zero floor space, you get to make aesthetic decisions without having to worry about the speakers clashing with your curtains.

How to install in-ceiling speakers?

A general set of guidelines will help you install any of the speakers given in this best in-ceiling speakers list:

  1. Select a location on the ceiling carefully. This should be close to your seating area in the room. It should be able to direct sound at you. Once you cut out the ceiling, it will be permanent change, so do not take a rash decision.
  2. Check that the selected location has an attic on the top of it. The sound needs to be reflected for a better bass performance.
  3. The best in-ceiling speakers are wired. So you must have the facility of running wires through the walls and ceilings. Keep the speaker cable thick and away from electrical wiring to avoid interference. Do a preliminary check to see the location of wires before cutting the holes.
  4. Using a stud-finder, look for the ceiling joists and find the spot to install speaker accordingly. Using the templates provided with the speakers, trace the hole with a pencil first and then with a box cutter.
  5. Put on your goggles to protect the eyes against dirt and debris that might dislodge from the insulation. Use a keyhole saw to remove the traced section of the drywall.
  6. Once the hole is made, check whether the speaker fits into the hole. If it does, pull down the ceiling wires that should connect to the speaker. Strip them about 1.5cm and connect the naked wires to the speaker inputs.
  7. Remove the grille of the speakers and screw them to the ceiling using the screws along the bezel.
  8. If the tweeters are directional, swivel them to point to your seating area. Close the grille and paint it to match your décor.

How to remove in-ceiling speaker covers?

Although it seems like a silly question, it’s a problem most people face. That’s why we suggest that you look at speakers with magnetic grille clasps like Polk Audio 255C-RT or Bose 791 II speakers.

However, if you have already taken a plunge with other speakers, turn to a paperclip for removing the grille. Insert the straightened end of this clip through a hole near one of the corners. Ease out the corner with the strength of the paperclip. Pull the corner a little farther till the next corner detaches. Use the paperclip on this corner to ease out the next corner. Only patience will help in this situation. Any undue pressure will simply bend the grille and destroy your speaker’s elegant face.

Which are the best in-ceiling speakers?

The market for in-ceiling speakers is limited. Still there were a number of options to consider. We looked for different installation and sound specifications and rounded up the 10 best in-ceiling speakers based on the following constraints:

  1. Audio: With speakers, we always check for sound first. Rather than comparing sound directly with each other, we see if they sound good for their price. Everyone has a different budget and we want you to have the best audio you can get in yours. So we selected the best in-ceiling speakers across low-to-high moderate budget.
  1. Construction:This involves two factors: looks and ease of installation. Ceiling speakers are meant to blend into the ceiling architecture. Or if they stand out, they should look decorative. Installing an in-ceiling speaker can be a pain as it is. Running wires, making cutouts and removing the speaker grille looks daunting on the face value. But some speakers make it abundantly easy to de-grille and install. They make it to the best in-ceiling speakers list.
  1. Budget: In-ceiling speakers are not a necessity for most people. So you might be working on a small budget. Or you might have money to splurge and want a full-fledged Surround Sound system. Either way you will find a good fit in the best in-ceiling speakers list.
    1. Durability:In-ceiling speakers would be hard to replace, especially if the replacement speakers have a different cutout shape or size. The best in-ceiling speakers use a sturdy construction with preferably moisture-resistant coating so that they can be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, basements as well.

  1. Polk Audio RC80i 2-Way In-Ceiling/In-Wall Speakers

Best Ceiling SpeakersPolk Audio has a number of specialized speakers like bookshelf, wall, floor-standing, rock speakers etc.. So when we started looking for in-ceiling speakers, we turned to Polk Audio first. And we were treated to the RC80i. It sounds full and balanced with its customized physical design. With convenient options for mounting, wiring and frequency response tuning, the RC80i make their way to the top spot on the best in-ceiling speakers list.

Design

The RC80i in-ceiling speakers from Polk Audio come as a pair. The circular accessory is round in shape with a grille facing outside. The grille and the flange are paintable. As a result, the speaker set comes with paint masks. The hole for mounting this speaker will measure 9.375 inches in diameter and 3.25 inches in depth. The backside is exposed so it’s easy to install them into walls or ceilings.

This in-ceiling speaker is moisture and rust-resistant, so it can be mounted in bathrooms, sauna and kitchens as well. Checkout some of the other water resistant speakers for your bathroom.

Features and Audio

There are two models of this Polk Audio in-ceiling speaker: one with a 6.5-inch cone and another with an 8-inch cone. RC80i carries an 8-inch dynamic balance cone. It holds rubber surround which is much more durable than the foam surrounds. There’s also a 1-inch metalized dome tweeter which is loaded on a 15-degree swivel mount. So the dome can be aimed in any direction for an open and airy audio.

The audio of this in-ceiling speaker is simply fun. It makes the movie dialog come alive. The bass is not exactly earth-shattering. But you would need a separate subwoofer for that. On its own, the RC80i does really well. It is timbre-matched to the Polk Audio RTi Series for smooth performance. But it does just as well with other home theater systems. It has a wall-distance toggle switch which tones the frequency into a flat graph when placed near a corner or wall. It also has a tweeter-level switch for equalizing the response to match your room acoustics.

Pros:

  • Balanced sound with an 8-inch cone
  • Moderately priced
  • Moisture and rust-resistant
  • Enjoyable audio

Cons:

  • Bass is lean
  • Backside is exposed

  1. Polk Audio TC80i Round 2-Way 8-Inch In-Ceiling Loudspeaker

Best Ceiling SpeakersWhile Polk Audio RC80i in-ceiling speaker is an excellent deal, there’s the TC80i  speaker from the same manufacturer. It sounds like a million dollars with a Surround Sound setup. The reason it’s ranked below the RC80i is because TC80i costs almost double. With a wider audio response than RC80i, the audio is noticeably better. The build and design are almost the same. With its exceptional audio, TC80i clinches a place on the best in-ceiling speakers list.

Design

Polk Audio TC80i in-ceiling speaker is a circular accessory of 9.375 inches and 3.25 inches deep. Its face is covered with a removable grille. The back portion is open for easy installation.  However, it stands the risk of being damaged by debris from the ceiling. So you will have to create your own ‘Hat’ for this speaker. The powder-coated aluminum grille is also moisture –resistant. So it can be installed in such environments like kitchen, bathroom etc.. You can also paint the grille to match the décor of your room.

Features and Audio

Like RC80i, the TC80i in-ceiling speaker has an 8-inch dynamic balance polymer composite driver. A rubber surround stuffs the cone and remains reliable for many years. The tweeter is a more evolved with a 1-inch silk dome. It is also equipped with wall-distance toggle and a tweeter switch for equalizing the sonic response. A 15-degree swivel extends the sound coverage to a focused area and provides better fidelity. Infinite Baffle Tuning technology uses virtual enclosure so that the low frequencies reflect and sound full-bodied.

This in-ceiling speaker sounds richer and clearer than the RC80i. It can also get plenty loud given its higher power-handling capacity of 125W. The bass response is solid and underscores the music well. With the wall-distance and tweeter button, there’s scope for aiming the sound towards your seating area. The frequency spans 30Hz-27kHz against 35Hz-20kHz by RC80i. As a result, the TC80i has better bass and treble extension. If it weren’t for the price, this speaker would shoot to the top of the best in-ceiling speaker list.

Pros:

  • Balanced sound with excellent bass
  • Paintable, moisture resistant grille
  • Loud with good power handling
  • Easy to install

Cons:

  • Back is exposed

  1. Yamaha NS-IW280CWH 6.5″ 3-Way In-Ceiling Speaker System

Best Ceiling SpeakersThere has been a lot of chatter about the Yamaha NS-IW280CWH in-ceiling speaker in the audiophile community. We got intrigued and decided to take a look because Yamaha is notorious for creating maverick products. We found its sound to be a revelation. The bass is kicky considering there’s no subwoofer involved. At its price,NS-IW280CWH exceeded all expectations, hence its place in the best in-ceiling speakers list.

Design

The Yamaha NS-IW280CWH in-ceiling speaker disappears into the interior design of your living room or bedroom. Its round design perfectly covers the mica woofer. It comes as a 2-speaker set or a bundle of either 4 speakers or 6 speakers. It comes with grilles for every speaker and can be painted to suit the color code of your rooms. The ceiling needs to be drilled with a 10-inch hole to hold the body of the speaker. The grille needs very little force to fit back on the speaker.

Features and Audio

The simple interface of the Yamaha NS-IW280CWH in-ceiling speaker conceals a 6.5-inch cone woofer. Two 0.75-inch dome tweeters handle the mid and high frequency ranges.  You get these speakers with either 100W power handling or 120-Watt power handling. The price difference is substantial, so evaluate your requirements before buying them. For normal use, 100W power would do.

The woofer of this in-ceiling speaker is tilted at 12 degrees. Both the tweeters revolve for directional audio to some extent.Yamaha suggests that you plant acoustic insulation around the speakers without creating contact with them. This is an especially useful trick to get the best out of them. For a surround sound experience, buying these as a bundle would be a good choice. The bass is punchy without being overbearing or boomy. The mid range and highs are handled well by the dual tweeters.

Pros:

  • Affordable speaker set
  • Easy to mount and connect
  • Balanced sound with good highs and mids
  • Paintable grille

Cons:

  • Low frequency needs more power

  1. Klipsch R-1800-C In-ceiling Loudspeaker

Best Ceiling SpeakersKlipsch is a well-known name in the audiophile community. The Klipsch headphones<Insert link to article Best Klipsch headphones>are used as reference in many of their discussions. So we were intrigued to see their product in the in-ceiling speakers market. The R-1800-C has garnered numerous positive reviews so we checked it out. True to their sound signature of high fidelity audio, these Klipsch speakers produce a full audio. We Klipsched them right into our best in-ceiling speakers list.

Design

Much like the previous speakers we covered, the Klipsch R-1800-C in-ceiling speaker is also round and inconspicuous in an interior environment. It takes a circular hole of 8-inch diameter to install this speaker. There’s a grille closing the front face. It can be painted to match the colors of the installation room. Four screws help the speaker to be mounted on the ceiling. The backside is exposed to face the ceiling. If your ceiling has a weak internal structure, you could be risking dust and cement chunks falling onto the back of the speaker cone.

Features and Audio

The KlipschR-1800-C in-ceiling speakers are a high quality product. They come as a single speaker for the price given online. They are on the higher end of the price range that way. But it reflects in their durable build. They pair up well with pretty much any Surround Sound system. If you run speaker wires through the wall, the rest of the installation process is quite simple. If you have some experience with in-ceiling speakers, these wouldn’t take more than 10 mins to be up and running. A template for making the hole is provided with the speaker.

The audio response of this in-ceiling speaker is dynamic. It is agile to catch up with the change in rhythm of the music. It has a good power handling capacity. Hook it up with a half-decent amp and you can light up the room with its audio.  All through the frequency graph, the clarity of music shone at us. It is peppered with a good amount of details too. The bass is punchy and sufficient. Mids and highs are crisp and clear.

Pros:

  • High-end, clear audio
  • Easy to install
  • Available as a single speaker

Cons:

  • Not reference quality sound

  1. Bose Virtually Invisible 791 In-Ceiling Speaker II

Best Ceiling SpeakersBose is a master at audio. When we started scouting for the best in-ceiling speakers we checked with the brands we know. That’s how the Virtually Invisible 791 II speaker popped up. Bose takes pride in how well 791 II blends into the contours of the room, hence the name. We found that the audio was up to the usual Bose standards of sound. Without much ado, we launched it straight to the best in-ceiling speakers list.

Design

Bose went bold when they decided to name their in-ceiling speakers “Virtually Invisible”. Being a force in the audio industry brings this kind of confidence in your merchandise. The 791 II earns its name from the exceptionally thin bezels which Bose claims, is almost not there. Since the grille in front of the speaker cone can be painted, this speaker remains camouflaged in the decoration of the room. This grille plate is magnetically attached to the speakers. This is eliminates the trouble of fitting it back like with the Yamaha NS-IW280CWH speakers. With the latter, there was a constant probability of bending the grille in the process of attaching it.

The elegant front-face has the lightest of branding with “Bose” printed in small font.

Features and Audio

The Bose 791 in-ceiling speakers II cost a bomb. So we expected them to be loaded with a whole lot of audio and technical voodoo. Bose keeps the feature list relatively simple. Most of the money invested goes into the audio signature that Bose specializes in. The grille face can be painted like most other speakers on this list.

The audio is produced by a 7-inch woofer and two strategically-positioned 1-inch tweeters. The wattage of the speaker goes up to 50W. We would recommend an amplifier of 10W power for the best utilization. The audio response is exactly what you would expect from a Bose system. Standalone these speakers sound tonally balanced and crisp. The low, middle and high frequencies are refined. Of course, the performance would get manifold better if you add a Bose centerpiece. At its price, it delivers the audio that works well for both dialogs and audiophile-grade music.

Pros:

  • Near-invisible design
  • Excellent clarity and balance of sound
  • Magnetic grille closure
  • Good power-handling

Cons:

  • Pricey

  1. Pyle PDIC60 In-Wall / In-Ceiling Dual 6.5-Inch Speaker System

Best Ceiling SpeakersOnce you have prepped your living room for music during parties, you might be in the market foradding speakers to minor rooms or basements.  It doesn’t make sense to plunk thousands of dollars here unless you are stinking rich and want to dish out the dough. This is where inexpensive in-ceiling speakers like Pyle PDIC60 come into play. For its price, it is an excellent investment and gets loud enough. It crooned itself right into the best in-ceiling speakers list.

Design

Pyle PDIC60 in-ceiling speaker has an architectural definition. It’s not supposed to be camouflaged by the ceiling. It is supposed to stand out like designs on a white or a contrasting-colored ceiling. The grille has a white circle close to the center and a broader bezel than the RC80i. It looks pretty next to the ceiling lights.

The grille face is 9 inches in diameter and the speaker itself is 2.35 inches thick. The back of this speaker is open so we suggest you cover it with a shrink wrap so dust does not collect over it.

Features and Audio

Even with the bigger face of the PDIC60 in-ceiling speaker, it requires a smaller cutout than most other speakers on the list. Pyle instructs to cut out 7.875-inch in diameter. Do note that this dimension is for the model with a 6.5-inch speaker cone. There’s another model, PDIC80, with an 8-inch cone. It requires a 9.35-inch cutout. The PDIC60 carries two 1-inch Titanium dome tweeters for the moderate and higher frequencies.

This pair of in-ceiling speakers has a decentaudio response. We didn’t expect melodies to sound like a live concert. But PDCI60 exceeded expectations. The audio is lively with a healthy involvement of bass. It performs well for background music at parties or while you are working in the room. It has a peak power capacity of 250W so we would pump it with a very low capacity amp. It is plenty loud for a mid-sized room. The tweeters are directable so you can point them to your seating or work area.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Pretty design
  • Easy to install
  • Decent audio

Cons:

  • Open back

  1. Polk Audio 255C-RT In-wall / In-ceiling center channel speaker

Best Ceiling SpeakersPolk Audio has a number of satellite speakers sets on the best in-ceiling speakers list. But they work best with a center piece speaker. RC80i is timbre-matched with the RTi series speakers. The 255C-RT speaker would be the perfect fit with two sets of RC80i for the living room. This speaker disappears into the surroundings so well that we were actually confused while looking at the picture online. We couldn’t find it against a white background! It is no doubt one of the best in-ceiling speakers.

Design

The 255C-RT in-ceiling speakerfrom Polk Audio is a square-shaped accessory. It complements the round satellite speakers well. The edges of the speakers are curved to avoid any snags or metal cuts. It measures 14.8125 inches in width and 9.3125 inch in height. It is covered by a grille which attaches to the speaker body with a magnetic clasp. This grille juts only 7mm from the installation surface, making it one of the most unnoticeable speakers on the best in-ceiling speakers list.

Features and Audio

Polk Audio 255C-RT in-ceiling speaker excels as a center piece because of its musical components. It has dual bass ports that pump out a rich and energetic low-end. These are two 5.25-inch polypropylene cones. Like RC80i, they use rubber surrounds for better durability. It has one 1-inch dome tweeter for the higher frequencies. The cutouts on the wall need to be 13.125 inches wide and 7.625 inches in length.

This in-ceiling speaker is an excellent companion in a home entertainment system. Being the center piece, it dishes out voluminous low frequencies. With the bass ports, you will never feel the lack of bass. Bass is clear without any signs of boominess. The mid and high frequencies are also crisp.Paired with a timbre-suited Polk Audio system, these would complete your 5.1 Surround Sound system. The overall refinement in the audio, especially vocals, made it an excellent buy for movies. The bass makes any gaming experience immersive.

Pros:

  • Nearly invisible installation
  • Outstanding clarity
  • Two bass ports
  • Magnetic grille clasp

Cons:

  • Tweeter is not directional

  1. Polk Audio RC6s In-Ceiling Stereo Speaker

Best Ceiling SpeakersIf the corners of your bathroom ceiling lack space for a pair of speakers, consider going for a stereo speaker like the Polk Audio RC6s in-ceiling speaker. This comes as an individual item which can play both channels of sound with just one piece. Like other Polk audio speakers, this is a smart-looking piece.  Its audio is richer and fuller than the RC80i. The difference is traded off with the price. With discounts, it becomes one of the best deals. Picking it for the best in-ceiling speakers list was a no-brainer.

Design

Polk Audio is consistent with their design. The RC6s looks pretty much like the TC80i in-ceiling speakers. It is round and hence easy to install. The grille has a matte white finish and it can be painted over to go with the color detailing of your room. The grill has a moisture-resistant exterior so you can install this speaker in the washrooms and kitchens.  Their back is exposed and carries spring-loaded push post connectors to attach the speaker wires.

Do note that since this is a stereo speaker, it needs four wires to play both the left and right channel.

Features and Audio

Much like the other Polk Audio speakers in this list, the RC6s in-ceiling speaker has a 6.5-inch dynamic balance speaker. Instead of the cheap foam surrounds that tear away within months, this speaker uses rubber surrounds inside the cone for better durability. There are dual 0.75-inch dome tweeters which can be swiveled slightly to direct sound. The RC6s require a 7.5625 inch round cutout which runs 2.375 inches in depth.

This in-ceiling speaker plays in 40-20,000 Hz frequency range. Being a stereo speaker, we first looked at how well the channel separation works.  Given its size we did not expect much. And we were right. There’s barely much soundstage. For a regular listener, this sound might do. In fact most of the non-audiophiles had only good things to say about its audio. It sounds pleasant with plenty of punchy bass. There’s no boominess or distortion. We enjoyed the light music while in the kitchen. The smoke from the sautéed spices did not affect them.

Pros:

  • Nearly invisible
  • Pleasant stereo sound in one speaker
  • Moisture-resistant paintable grille
  • Durable build

Cons:

  • Low stereo separation

  1. JBL SP8CII 2-Way, Round 8-Inch In-Ceiling Speaker with Swivel Mount Tweeter

Best Ceiling SpeakersJBL is best known for dexterous headphones and Bluetooth speakers<Insert link to the Best Outdoor Bluetooth speakers. So we were overjoyed to find they have in-ceiling speakers too. The SP8CII brought back memories of the JBL Flip 2 Bluetooth speakers. It comes as a pair of speakers that can be easily installed into a modified interior. The audio lives up to the JBL fame. We launched it straight into the best in-ceiling speakers list.

Design

JBL SP8CII in-ceiling speaker looks like the Pyle RC80i in its construction. It has dog-ear brackets that make it compatible with a modified cutout. It comes with a speaker grille that can be removed and painted . The circular shape is easier to make cutouts for. There’s minimal branding on the speaker grille with JBL printed across the center. For sawing through the drywall, you should use the template supplied with the speaker.

Features and Audio

The SP8CII in-ceiling speakers enclose an 8-inch Titanium laminate bass driver and a 1-inch tweeter. While the cone driver is fixed, the tweeter can be swiveled to be directed at the seating area. Like Polk Audio, JBL also believes in quality. Hence they use a rubber surround in the cone. This material is also said to reduce distortion and rein in the bass. JBL supplies rough-in frames separately, if you are installing these in a new building.

The audio quality of this in-ceiling speaker is at par with the expectation from this price. JBL packs a lot of punch in the lower frequencies of its audio response.  The treble matches up with this vigorous bass performance.  So SP8CII is best to rock a party. The vocals are a tiny bit lacking in comparison to the highs and lows. They are good for movie watching for regular listeners. With audiophiles, JBL’s shortcoming will not go unnoticed.

Pros:

  • Good bass and treble
  • Dog-ear brackets
  • Paintable grille

Cons:

  • Mids are slightly recessed
